Actually, early morning of Day 8 Sawyer woke up needing to pee and Jason jumped up to help him considering it was 3 a.m. He felt hot, so we took his temp, and it was 103! Poor guy! We put him on the couch, gave him some meds, and Daddy snuggled him to sleep.
I was doubly sad for him because this was likely to put a halt to the one thing Sawyer was looking forward to the most on this trip...riding the ferry! Our trip to Ocracoke was planned for nearly the whole day, and I was afraid now we might not make it to the big O at all.
However, Sawyer woke up fever free, felt like a champ, and we decided to throw caution to the ocean wind and roll with it!
The kids were super stoked to ride the ferry.
Our first boat was the Hatteras.
Bebe was pleased since we had just climbed Hatteras Lighthouse two days before,
and we passed it on our way to the ferry docks.
Our attempt at a family ferry pic. Umm...this was the best of like 7 shots. Sad.
And then we were there!
First stop...the chunky, short white lighthouse.
I resemble that remark! ha ha
The view from across Silver Lake is like a postcard! Gorgeous!
Someone wanted a pic of her at the Fort Ocracoke marker.
Ok. Will do, Sass.
Bebe wanted to ride horses on the beach, but time just wasn't allowing for it today.
Plus, the guy had 3 horses and we're a crew of 8!
Next stop...Howard's Pub for a bite of lunch!
Back at the ferry docks there are lovely dunes all around the waiting area.
However, behind those dunes is a most spectacular sight!
It is the end of the island and it feels like
the edge of the world.
I think Heaven might look like this!
The kids ran wild
and the Littles whooped it up..."Blackbeard's treasure is OURS!"
Back on the ferry...they ventured up front to catch the sea spray off the front of the boat.
They were not allowed to go to the edge (like some other coo-coo parent let her kids-see right),
and Nana was deployed to the edge as boat monitor.
Our boat back...the Croatoan.
This was also a delight to the kids seeing as how
they had just seen the Lost Colony and learned about the
existence of the Croatoan tribe.
Back at our place...we hit the beach for some swim and sand time.
Then these guys came along just riding the waves.
This kite surfing is not new, I know, but it has certainly taken off at the OBX.
Taken off...you like that, right!?
They just zipped in and out of the waves, coming onto the shore, and
heading right back into the surf. Some of the more experienced would jet off the waves
jumping about 20 feet high and covering a good 50 feet across. Amazing to watch!
They just kept coming by and coming by our place...
and as they went around the pier they looked like one big
group...I got 9 in this shot.
A constant movement of shape and color.
Very mesmerizing.
