Boy Bed Project

We officially have less than 2 weeks until school starts so I figured I'd better wrap up some projects I have been working on all summer.

The biggest project has been to get beds for the boys.  I hate to say it but my boys have been sleeping on mattresses on the floor for a long time!  We sold their bunk beds like a year and half ago (or more) with the promise that we would get them something different.  Jason wanted to build them a loft type system so they could have play/work space underneath and sleep up top.  The plans I drew up I just never really loved and Jason didn't have time to build them anyway...so months and months slipped by.  Further, I didn't really have the money to buy brand new beds right now.  So in mid-June I got a wild hair and checked out the Goodwill.  I hadn't been there in ages!  Lo and behold, the very first thing I see...right at the front door...was not one, but two little wooden twin beds just waiting to be loved!

Hidden gems

I pulled them out and then proceeded to hem and haw (southern term) about whether I was ready to go for it.  Encouraged by my mom...I bought them.

They are different styles, but I was actually drawn to the fact that they would be the same (once painted), yet different for each boy.

So the next weekend, Sawyer (who was beyond excited) and I got to sanding!  We discovered that the beds, which were white, had also been pink at one time, red before that, and even stained.

Then life happened and we went on vacation for a week and then probably some baseball and volleyball happened.  I didn't get much done.

So, around mid-July I did a couple of coats of paint.  I chose a navy blue called Admiral.  I loved it right away. I didn't take a picture of them while painting, but one night as we were running out the door I took a quick pic of them in the garage (ignore the mess).

Finally, August rolled around and there was more baseball, volleyball, and summer activities to do.  I did get the chance to do a matte poly on the beds a couple of times here and there and finally finished them last weekend!  Almost, but not quite 2 months after I bought them!

  Beds going in...

Final result!  And while they are not perfect...I'm happy and the boys LOVE them!  I must admit...I'm happy too because underbed storage for winter clothes is awesome!!!!
