A Significant, Life-Altering Event Is Occurring

Sawyer is peeing in the potty! Y'all, if you don't have kids...you cannot know how life-altering an event this is for a family! And I say "family" because it is not only a significant milestone in the kid's life, but also for his parents (& their wallet!). If you have only one kid...yes, I'm singling out parents of one kid...then it is definitely a fantastic event, but it is usually soon forgotten. However, when you have more than one kid...you know the days of potty training are coming. It's like enjoying a sunny day only to see clouds building on the horizon. You often don't know how bad the storm might be, but those clouds become crazy ominous by a kid that doesn't want to use the potty. Sawyer has been a category 3 hurricane. He has been adamant about not wanting to use the potty. We haven't even talked about it a lot, but dare we even mention him trying or wearing underwear has been taboo! I know that with most kids, even the most reluctant child will one day just start going for it...and Sawyer finally is THAT KID. He up and decided the last day of preschool to wear underwear and start peeing in the potty. The kicker might have been the HUGE MEGA-BAG of peanut M&Ms I bought. I announced to everyone in the house..."Hear ye! Hear ye! This WHOLE bag is just for Sawyer. No one else AT ALL. He can have as many as he wants when he starts going peepee in the potty!" To which the other kids oohed and aahed on cue. I saw the boy swell 2 shirt sizes with pride. Then I put them in a glass mason jar to reveal all of their colorful wonder. I wrapped a bright green curly-cue bow around the lid for just a slight touch of irresistable whimsy. My plan, as I wrung my hands like Dr. Doofenshmirtz (for you Phineas and Ferb fans), was to entice the boy to potty. No stickers, lollipops, new underwear, praise, whatever would even get him to talk about it in the past 6 months...this was one more attempt until I put the idea aside for a couple of months. Well, making a short story long...call it timing...call it enticement...it is working. He's wearing underwear and peeing in the potty or going outside in my azalea bushes! He and his brother are now holding contests to see who can pee further off the back deck!! It is hilarious! Definitely a 'boys will be boys' moment. So keep your fingers crossed for us...he's had a couple of accidents and we're still working on #2 in the potty, but it's a process folks! But thank goodness because they won't let him start preschool in the 3 year old class until he is potty-trained! 3 down...1 to go!
